How to Set Up Digital Wellbeing on an Android Tablet

Digital Wellbeing is Android’s built-in tool for understanding and managing your screen time. It tracks how much time you spend on each app, how often you unlock your tablet, and how many notifications you receive, then provides tools to set limits and reduce distractions.

Accessing Digital Wellbeing

Go to Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls (or just Digital Wellbeing on some tablets). The main dashboard displays a circular chart showing your screen time for the current day, broken down by app.

Understanding the Dashboard

The dashboard shows your total screen time, number of notifications received, and number of times you unlocked the tablet. Tap the chart to see a detailed breakdown by app, ranked by usage time. Tap any app to see daily and hourly usage patterns over the past week.

This data helps identify which apps consume the most attention. Many users are surprised to discover how much time goes to social media, news, or video apps.

Setting App Timers

Tap the timer icon next to any app in the usage breakdown to set a daily time limit. When you reach the limit, the app icon grays out on your home screen and the app is paused for the rest of the day. You can override the timer through Digital Wellbeing settings if needed, but the friction of doing so encourages mindful usage.

Set timers for apps that tend to consume more time than intended. Social media apps and video streaming services are common candidates. Start with generous limits and tighten them gradually as you build awareness of your habits.

Focus Mode

Focus Mode lets you pause distracting apps on a schedule or on demand. Go to Digital Wellbeing and tap Focus Mode. Select the apps you find distracting. When Focus Mode is active, those apps are paused and their notifications are hidden.

Set a schedule for automatic activation. For example, enable Focus Mode during work hours on weekdays to block social media and games. Or activate it manually when you need to concentrate on a specific task.

You can take a break from Focus Mode temporarily without disabling it entirely, useful for checking a paused app during a natural break.

Bedtime Mode

Bedtime Mode helps you disconnect before sleep. Configure it in Digital Wellbeing under Bedtime Mode. Set your bedtime and wake-up time. When active, the screen turns grayscale to make content less visually engaging, and Do Not Disturb activates to silence notifications.

Grayscale mode is surprisingly effective at making your tablet less appealing to use. Colorful apps and videos lose their pull when displayed in shades of gray, making it easier to put the tablet down.

Wind Down Schedule

Some tablets combine Bedtime Mode with a Wind Down feature that gradually applies grayscale and Do Not Disturb as bedtime approaches rather than switching abruptly. The gradual transition provides a more natural signal to stop using your tablet.

Notification Management

Digital Wellbeing’s notification tracking reveals which apps send the most notifications. Use this data to go into each app’s notification settings and disable unnecessary alerts. Reducing notification volume decreases the urge to pick up your tablet and reduces context-switching interruptions during focused activities.

Heads Up

The Heads Up feature reminds you to stop looking at your tablet while walking. When enabled and the tablet detects that you are walking while using it, a notification encourages you to put the device away. This feature is more relevant for phone use but works on tablets with the necessary sensors.

Final Thoughts

Digital Wellbeing provides the data and tools to build a healthier relationship with your tablet. Start by observing your usage patterns for a week without setting limits. Then add app timers for your biggest time sinks and configure Focus Mode for your productive hours. Small adjustments compound into meaningful changes in how you spend your screen time.
