Screen Lock Configuration
A strong screen lock is the first line of defense against unauthorized access. Use fingerprint or face unlock for convenience with a 6-digit PIN or password as the backup authentication method. Avoid pattern locks, as they are easily observed and reproduced by bystanders. On Samsung tablets, configure auto-lock timing to 30 seconds or 1 minute in Settings, Lock Screen, Secure Lock Settings, Lock Automatically. Enable Lock Instantly With Power Key to lock the screen immediately when you press the power button.
App Permission Audit
Android permissions control what data each app can access. Navigate to Settings, Privacy, Permission Manager to review which apps have access to location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, and other sensitive data. Revoke permissions that apps do not legitimately need. A weather app needs location but not camera access. A game rarely needs microphone or contacts. Set permissions to Allow Only While Using The App rather than Allow All The Time when possible. Android 12 and later show indicator icons when the camera or microphone is actively in use, alerting you to unexpected access.
Network Security
Protect your data on untrusted networks by setting up a VPN that encrypts all internet traffic. Avoid conducting banking, entering passwords, or accessing sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi without a VPN. Disable auto-connect to open Wi-Fi networks in Settings, Wi-Fi, Advanced, to prevent your tablet from automatically joining unsecured networks.
Google Account Security
Your Google account is the master key to your tablet. Secure it with two-factor authentication at myaccount.google.com/security. Use the Google Authenticator app or a physical security key rather than SMS-based 2FA, which is vulnerable to SIM swapping attacks. Review connected devices and recent activity regularly. A compromised Google account can remotely wipe your tablet, access your email, and reset passwords for accounts linked to your Google email address.
Encryption and Secure Folder
Modern Android tablets running Android 10 and later encrypt internal storage by default, meaning data is unreadable without your screen lock credentials. Samsung tablets additionally offer Secure Folder, an encrypted container that runs separate instances of apps with independent login credentials. Use Secure Folder for banking apps, private photos, sensitive documents, and personal messaging apps on a shared tablet. Files and apps inside Secure Folder are invisible and inaccessible outside it.
Physical Security
Digital security means little if the physical tablet is stolen. Enable Find My Device in Settings, Security, Find My Device to locate, lock, or remotely wipe a lost tablet through google.com/android/find. Samsung tablets also support SmartThings Find for more precise location tracking. Never leave your tablet unattended in public spaces. If your tablet is stolen, remotely wipe it immediately through Find My Device and change your Google account password.
Securing a Shared Family Tablet
When multiple family members use the same tablet, Android multi-user profiles provide individual accounts with separate apps, settings, and data. Each user logs in to their own profile, preventing children from accessing parent apps and vice versa. Set up profiles in Settings, System, Multiple Users. The primary user controls which features guest and restricted profiles can access. For children, combine user profiles with parental controls for comprehensive access management. For shared tablets in households with sensitive professional data, this separation prevents accidental access to work documents and accounts by other family members.
