How to Remove Bloatware from Your Android Tablet
How to Remove Bloatware from Your Android Tablet
Bloatware is preinstalled apps you never use. They consume storage, RAM, and receive unwanted updates.
Uninstall Where Possible
Settings, Apps, select the bloatware app, Uninstall. Some preinstalled apps can be fully removed.
Disable What Cannot Be Uninstalled
For apps without an Uninstall option, tap Disable. Disabled apps consume no RAM, receive no updates, and disappear from the app drawer. They remain on storage but inactive.
Common Bloatware
Samsung: Samsung Free, Samsung Global Goals, Bixby (can be disabled). Amazon Fire: Amazon apps, ads (can be partly removed). Carrier tablets: carrier-specific apps.
ADB Method (Advanced)
Using ADB (Android Debug Bridge) from a computer, you can remove system apps that cannot be uninstalled through Settings. Enable Developer Options and USB debugging first. This is reversible through factory reset.
Impact
Removing bloatware improves performance and frees storage.
Identifying Actual Bloatware vs Useful Preinstalled Apps
Not every preinstalled app is bloatware. Some preinstalled apps provide genuine value: Samsung Notes is excellent for note-taking, Samsung Internet is a capable browser, and Samsung Members provides useful device diagnostics and support access. True bloatware includes apps you never use that consume storage and receive unwanted updates. Common examples on Samsung tablets include Samsung Free and Samsung Global Goals. On Amazon Fire tablets, Amazon own shopping, advertising, and service apps dominate the app drawer. Evaluate each preinstalled app based on whether you actually use it before disabling or removing it.
The ADB Removal Method in Detail
For apps that cannot be uninstalled or disabled through Settings, ADB or Android Debug Bridge provides a more powerful removal method from a connected computer. Enable Developer Options by tapping Build Number 7 times in Settings, About Tablet, then enable USB Debugging in Developer Options. Connect the tablet to a computer via USB-C. Install ADB on the computer from the Android developer website. Open a command prompt and type the uninstall command with the package name. The package name can be found using the App Inspector app on your tablet. This method is reversible through a factory reset which restores all system apps.
Impact on System Stability
Removing certain system apps through ADB can cause instability if other system components depend on them. Do not remove: Google Play Services, Google Services Framework, Samsung One UI Home, system launcher, or any app whose function you do not understand. If you accidentally remove a dependency and experience crashes or boot issues, factory reset restores all system apps to their original state. For safety, research each package name before removal by searching online for reports from other users who have removed it from the same tablet model.
Carrier Bloatware on Cellular Tablets
Cellular tablets purchased through carriers often include carrier-specific apps for account management, visual voicemail, cloud storage, and entertainment services. These carrier apps typically cannot be uninstalled through Settings but can be disabled. The ADB method removes them for the current user. Carrier apps consume 200MB to 1GB of storage collectively and run background services that consume RAM and battery. Removing or disabling them improves performance and reclaims meaningful storage space, especially on tablets with limited 64GB internal storage where every gigabyte matters.
Monitoring After Removal
After removing or disabling bloatware, monitor your tablet for unexpected behavior over the following week. If any functionality breaks, such as missing settings options, notification failures, or app crashes, the removed app may have been a dependency for another system function. Re-enable the disabled app through Settings, Apps, show disabled apps, and re-enable the suspected app. If you used ADB to remove the app, a factory reset is the simplest way to restore it. Document which apps you removed so you can quickly identify the cause if issues arise later.
