How to Fix Sound and Speaker Problems on Android Tablets
How to Fix Sound Problems on Android Tablets
Check Volume
Press Volume Up. Check Settings, Sounds and Vibration for all volume sliders.
Check Do Not Disturb
DND mode silences notifications and media. Disable in Quick Settings.
Bluetooth Audio
Sound may route to a connected Bluetooth device. Disconnect Bluetooth to test built-in speakers.
Restart
Audio driver issues resolve with a restart.
Clean Speakers
Dust blocks speaker grilles. Use a soft brush to clean.
Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode identifies if an app is affecting audio.
External Speakers
If built-in speakers are damaged, Bluetooth speakers provide a workaround.
Diagnosing the Sound Source
Before troubleshooting, identify which audio path is affected. Test built-in speakers by playing audio with no Bluetooth devices connected and no headphones plugged in. Test the headphone output by connecting wired headphones through a USB-C adapter or 3.5mm jack. Test Bluetooth audio by connecting Bluetooth headphones or speakers. If sound fails through only one path, the problem is isolated to that specific output. If all audio paths fail, the issue is software or system-level.
Separate Volume Controls in Android
Android maintains independent volume levels for media, notifications, ringtones, alarms, and calls. Press any volume button, then tap the three-dot icon or the volume slider expand button to reveal all volume channels. A common frustration is having media volume at zero while notification volume is at maximum, or vice versa. In video call apps, an additional in-app volume control may override system settings. Check both the system volume and the app internal audio settings when troubleshooting call audio issues.
Audio Quality Issues: Distortion and Crackling
If sound plays but with distortion, crackling, or abnormal quality, several causes are possible. Excessive volume can overdrive the built-in speakers, causing audible distortion. Lower the volume to test whether the distortion disappears. Damaged speakers from liquid exposure or physical impact produce crackling at any volume. Water in the speaker grille can temporarily cause muffled or distorted audio: place the tablet speaker-side down on a dry cloth and wait for evaporation, or use a tone generator app to play a low-frequency tone that physically vibrates water out of the speaker opening.
Bluetooth Audio Quality and Troubleshooting
Bluetooth audio quality depends on the codec, signal strength, and device compatibility. If Bluetooth audio sounds compressed or tinny, check the active codec in Developer Options, Bluetooth Audio Codec. Switch to a higher-quality codec if your headphones support it. If Bluetooth audio stutters or cuts out, reduce the distance between the tablet and the Bluetooth device, remove obstructions, and disable Wi-Fi temporarily to test for 2.4GHz interference. Pairing devices from scratch by unpairing then re-pairing often resolves persistent Bluetooth audio quality issues.
Notification Sound Not Working
If media audio works but notification sounds are silent, check these settings: Do Not Disturb mode in the Quick Settings toggle, notification volume which is separate from media volume, app notification settings in Settings, Notifications, App Notifications, and notification channel settings within the app itself. Some apps allow disabling notification sounds per conversation or category. A recently installed automation app or battery optimization rule may be silencing notifications in the background.
Testing with Different Audio Sources
When diagnosing sound issues, test with multiple audio sources to isolate the problem. Play a YouTube video for streaming audio. Play a local music file through the default music player for stored media audio. Make a phone call or Google Meet call for communication audio. Play a game for gaming audio. If sound works from some sources but not others, the issue is app-specific rather than system-wide. Each app has its own volume settings, audio output selection, and permission requirements that may need configuration independently from the system audio settings.
