How to Fix Bluetooth Problems on Android Tablets

Bluetooth issues affect keyboards, mice, headphones, and speakers.

Quick Fixes

Toggle Bluetooth off/on. Restart tablet. Restart the Bluetooth accessory. Ensure accessory is in pairing mode and within range.

Unpair and Re-pair

Settings, Connections, Bluetooth. Tap gear icon, Unpair. Put accessory in pairing mode and reconnect.

Clear Bluetooth Cache

Settings, Apps, show system apps, Bluetooth, Clear Cache.

Check for Interference

Wi-Fi routers and USB 3.0 devices interfere with Bluetooth 2.4GHz signals.

Software Update

Update tablet for Bluetooth driver fixes.

Reset Network Settings

Settings, General Management, Reset, Reset Network Settings. Re-pair all devices afterward.

Audio Delay and Lag

Bluetooth audio latency causes noticeable delay between video playback and audio, making video calls and movie watching uncomfortable. The latency depends on the Bluetooth codec. SBC has the highest latency at 100 to 200 milliseconds. AAC reduces it to 50 to 100 milliseconds. Samsung Scalable Codec and aptX Low Latency achieve under 40 milliseconds. To change the codec, enable Developer Options by tapping Build Number 7 times in Settings, About Tablet, then go to Developer Options, Bluetooth Audio Codec, and select the lowest-latency codec your headphones support. If latency remains unacceptable, wired headphones via a USB-C adapter eliminate the delay entirely.

Multi-Device Connection Conflicts

When a Bluetooth accessory is paired with multiple devices like tablet, phone, and laptop, it sometimes fails to connect to your tablet because it has already automatically connected to another paired device. Most Bluetooth devices connect to the first device they detect at power-on. To ensure connection to your tablet: turn on the accessory while the tablet is the closest active device with Bluetooth enabled, or disconnect the accessory from the other device first. Multi-point Bluetooth headphones and keyboards that support simultaneous connections to 2 to 3 devices resolve this issue entirely.

Bluetooth Range and Signal Issues

Standard Bluetooth 5.0 operates reliably within 30 feet with clear line of sight. Walls, floors, and human bodies reduce effective range. If your Bluetooth accessory disconnects when you walk to another room, the distance exceeds practical range. Move the tablet closer, remove obstructions, or upgrade to accessories with Bluetooth 5.0 or newer for maximum range.

Fixing Bluetooth Not Discovering Devices

If your tablet cannot find a Bluetooth device during pairing, verify the accessory is in discoverable mode. Most accessories enter pairing mode by holding a specific button for 3 to 5 seconds until an LED flashes rapidly. Restart both devices. Ensure location services are enabled on the tablet, as Android requires location permission for Bluetooth scanning since Android 6.0. If the device still does not appear, check whether the tablet Bluetooth version supports the accessory protocol.

Bluetooth Battery Drain

Bluetooth itself consumes minimal battery in modern tablets using Bluetooth 5.0 and later. However, keeping Bluetooth enabled triggers periodic device scanning that adds a small but measurable drain. If battery life is critical, disable Bluetooth when not actively using wireless accessories. The bigger battery impact comes from the connected devices themselves: streaming audio to Bluetooth headphones for hours uses battery for both the Bluetooth radio and the audio processing. If Bluetooth battery drain seems excessive, check whether a paired device is maintaining an unnecessary active connection in the background.

Updating Bluetooth Firmware

Some Bluetooth accessories receive firmware updates through companion apps that fix connectivity issues, improve audio quality, and add features. Samsung Galaxy Buds update through the Galaxy Wearable app. Sony headphones update through the Sony Headphones Connect app. Jabra devices update through the Jabra Sound+ app. Check whether your Bluetooth accessory has a companion app with available firmware updates, as outdated firmware is a common cause of persistent Bluetooth issues that standard troubleshooting cannot resolve.
