How to Fix Camera Issues on Android Tablets
Restart
Camera app crashes and black screens often resolve with a restart.
Clear Camera App Cache
Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage, Clear Cache. Clear Data if needed.
Check Permissions
Settings, Apps, Camera, Permissions. Ensure camera and microphone access are granted.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode determines if a third-party camera app conflicts with the default camera.
Software Update
Update for camera driver and processing fixes.
Hardware
If camera shows black, blurry, or distorted images after all fixes, the camera module may be physically damaged. Contact manufacturer.
Camera App Freezes on Black Screen
A black screen when opening the camera app is one of the most common tablet camera issues. The camera hardware may be occupied by another app running in the background. Force-close all apps using the recent apps screen by swiping up and holding, then tapping Close All. If the black screen persists, restart the tablet. Clear the camera app cache and data in Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage, Clear Cache, then Clear Data if cache clearing does not resolve the issue. If the problem occurs only with a third-party camera app but the built-in camera works, the third-party app has a compatibility issue with your tablet camera hardware.
Focus and Image Quality Problems
If the camera focuses slowly, produces blurry images, or shows inconsistent focus behavior, clean the rear camera lens with a microfiber cloth. Fingerprints and smudges are the most common cause of soft, hazy photos. Verify that the screen protector or case is not partially covering the camera lens. If focus problems persist after cleaning, restart the tablet and try the camera in Safe Mode to rule out third-party app interference.
Front Camera Quality for Video Calls
Tablet front cameras are typically lower resolution at 8 to 12MP and lower quality than rear cameras. For better video call quality: ensure adequate lighting facing you as this is the single most impactful improvement, clean the front camera lens, check that video call apps are set to use the front camera rather than the rear camera, and verify that your internet connection supports HD video streaming. If front camera quality remains insufficient for professional use, consider an external USB webcam.
Camera Not Available After Update
Software updates occasionally introduce camera bugs that prevent the camera from initializing. This typically appears as a Camera Failed error message. First, clear the camera app cache and data. If the issue persists, wipe the cache partition through Recovery Mode by holding Power plus Volume Up from a powered-off state then selecting Wipe Cache Partition. This does not erase personal data but rebuilds system caches that may conflict with the updated camera driver.
Using the Tablet Camera Effectively
Tablet cameras serve specific use cases well despite their lower quality compared to phone cameras. Document scanning using Google Drive scan feature or Adobe Scan leverages the tablet large screen for previewing scanned documents. Whiteboard capture in meeting rooms benefits from the tablet screen size for reviewing the capture. Video calls use the front camera at lower resolution but benefit from the tablet superior positioning on a stand at eye level. For photography beyond casual snaps and utility captures, a phone camera consistently outperforms tablet cameras due to better optics, larger sensors, and more advanced computational photography.
Third-Party Camera App Alternatives
If the built-in camera app has persistent issues that updates and cache clearing do not resolve, a third-party camera app may work as a workaround. Open Camera is a free, open-source camera app that accesses the same hardware through a different software path. Google Camera ports available for some tablet models provide Google computational photography features. Install a third-party camera app and test whether the camera hardware works through the alternative app. If it does, the issue is isolated to the default camera app software rather than the camera hardware itself.
