How to Configure Do Not Disturb Mode on Android Tablets

Do Not Disturb mode silences notifications, calls, and alerts on your Android tablet so you can focus, sleep, or attend meetings without interruption. Android provides extensive customization so DND blocks distractions while still allowing truly important alerts to reach you.

Enabling Do Not Disturb

The quickest method is tapping the Do Not Disturb tile in Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen, find the DND tile, and tap it. DND activates immediately with your previously configured settings.

For more control, long-press the DND tile or go to Settings, Sound, Do Not Disturb to access the full configuration.

Setting the Duration

When you enable DND from Quick Settings, Android asks how long it should remain active. Choose from preset durations like one hour or two hours, until you manually turn it off, or until a specific time. You can also set a default duration in DND settings so it activates without asking each time.

Configuring Exceptions

People

Choose who can still reach you during DND. Options include:

  • Starred contacts — Only contacts you have marked as favorites
  • All contacts — Anyone in your contact list
  • No one — Complete silence from calls and messages
  • Custom — Select specific contacts who can break through DND

Repeated Callers

Enable repeated caller exception to allow calls from someone who calls twice within 15 minutes. This catches genuinely urgent calls while blocking single-attempt spam and non-urgent contact.

Apps

Whitelist specific apps that should still send notifications during DND. Alarm clock apps, medication reminders, and security monitoring apps are common exceptions. Go to DND settings, Apps, and select which ones should override the silence.

Alarms and Media

Configure whether alarm sounds and media playback audio are affected by DND. Most users keep alarms active so morning alarms still work. Media settings control whether music and video audio is silenced during DND.

Scheduled DND

Time-Based Schedules

Create automatic schedules that activate DND at specific times. Go to Settings, Sound, Do Not Disturb, Schedules. Add a time-based schedule with start and end times and the days of the week it applies. Common schedules include nighttime (11 PM to 7 AM), workday morning focus (9 AM to 12 PM), and evening wind-down.

Calendar-Based Schedules

Create schedules that activate DND based on your calendar events. Android reads your Google Calendar and activates DND during events that match your criteria. Filter by calendar, event type, or reply status. DND activates when the event starts and deactivates when it ends.

This is particularly useful for meetings. Set up a calendar-based schedule that activates DND during all accepted calendar events, ensuring your tablet stays silent during video calls and in-person meetings without manual intervention.

Visual Interruption Settings

DND can also suppress visual interruptions. Configure whether notifications appear on the lock screen, whether the notification badge dots show on app icons, and whether the status bar shows notification icons during DND. Full suppression creates a completely distraction-free screen.

Bedtime Mode Integration

Bedtime Mode in Digital Wellbeing works alongside DND. When Bedtime Mode activates, it enables DND automatically and adds grayscale to your screen. This combined approach reduces both audible and visual stimulation before sleep.

Samsung DND Features

Samsung tablets add DND exceptions for Samsung-specific features like Samsung Health reminders and SmartThings alerts. Samsung also provides a Hide Notifications Visually option that blocks notification pop-ups while keeping sounds silenced.

Quick DND Activation Methods

Beyond the Quick Settings tile, you can set up other activation methods. Some tablets support flipping the device face-down to activate DND. Samsung tablets let you assign DND to a side key double-press or triple-press. Tasker or Samsung Routines can trigger DND based on location, Wi-Fi connection, or time conditions.

Final Thoughts

A well-configured Do Not Disturb mode protects your focus and sleep without disconnecting you from genuine emergencies. Set up exceptions for important contacts, create automatic schedules for recurring quiet times, and use calendar-based activation for meetings. The initial configuration takes a few minutes but eliminates daily notification management.
