Android Tablet vs iPad for Drawing and Digital Art

Digital artists choosing between Android tablets and iPad face a nuanced decision. iPad with Apple Pencil and Procreate has been the default recommendation for years, but Samsung’s S Pen ecosystem and improvements in Android drawing apps have narrowed the gap significantly.

Our Approach: This comparison uses analysis of real-world use cases where each option excels. Evaluation criteria included software ecosystem, stylus responsiveness, processor benchmarks, battery endurance. None of our selections were paid placements or sponsored content.

Stylus Hardware Comparison

Apple Pencil 2 offers imperceptible latency, tilt sensitivity, and double-tap gesture for tool switching. It is the benchmark for tablet styluses. Costs $129 separately.

Samsung S Pen provides 4,096 pressure levels, sub-3ms latency on the Tab S9 series, tilt sensitivity, and Air Actions for remote gesture control. Included free with Tab S9, S9 Plus, S9 Ultra, and S9 FE. The value proposition is strong.

In blind testing, many artists cannot distinguish between Apple Pencil and S Pen latency on flagship devices. The gap has become negligible for most drawing styles. Where Apple Pencil still edges ahead is in the consistency of pressure curve accuracy at very light and very heavy pressure extremes.

Drawing App Ecosystem

This is where iPad maintains its strongest advantage. Procreate at $12.99 one-time purchase is the most popular digital illustration app in the world, and it is iPad-exclusive. Its brush engine, animation tools, and intuitive interface set the standard.

Clip Studio Paint is available on both platforms with identical feature sets. Professional manga artists and illustrators often prefer Clip Studio for its vector tools, 3D pose references, and multi-page manga workflow. On the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra’s 14.6-inch screen, Clip Studio Paint delivers an experience comparable to a Wacom Cintiq.

ibisPaint X is free on Android and iOS with a massive brush library and social sharing features. On Android tablets, it is the most popular drawing app.

Infinite Painter is an Android-focused app with excellent brush blending, perspective guides, and a clean interface. It has no iOS counterpart and represents the best Android-exclusive drawing experience.

MediBang Paint is free and cross-platform with cloud storage, manga templates, and collaborative features.

Sketchbook by Autodesk is free on both platforms with a professional brush engine and predictive stroke technology.

Display Comparison for Art

Samsung’s AMOLED displays on Tab S9, S9 Plus, and S9 Ultra offer the widest color gamut among tablets, exceeding DCI-P3 with 120Hz refresh. Colors are vivid and true blacks provide excellent contrast for viewing artwork.

iPad Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) delivers higher peak brightness and excellent HDR rendering. The base iPad uses a Liquid Retina LCD that is color-accurate but lacks OLED’s contrast.

For color-critical work, both Samsung AMOLED and iPad Pro mini-LED are excellent. Samsung’s AMOLED provides better dark room viewing, while iPad Pro offers higher brightness for well-lit studio environments.

Screen Size Options

Samsung offers the largest drawing canvas at 14.6 inches on the Tab S9 Ultra. iPad Pro maxes out at 13 inches. For artists who want maximum canvas space, the Tab S9 Ultra is the only option without moving to a desktop drawing display.

The Tab S9 Plus at 12.4 inches and iPad Pro at 13 inches are closely matched. Both provide comfortable drawing surfaces. The Tab S9 FE at 10.9 inches and base iPad at 10.9 inches offer identical canvas sizes.

Surface Feel

Both glass displays benefit from paperlike screen protectors that add friction to simulate drawing on paper. Without a protector, both feel slippery under the stylus tip. Paperlike protectors reduce display clarity slightly but dramatically improve the drawing feel.

Samsung S Pen nibs can be replaced with different friction levels. Apple Pencil tips are replaceable but offer only one friction type.

Professional Artist Verdict

If Procreate is essential to your workflow, iPad is the only choice. For Clip Studio Paint users, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra offers a larger canvas with equivalent app performance and an included stylus.

For hobbyists and students exploring digital art, Samsung tablets offer better value with the included S Pen. For professional illustrators whose income depends on their tools, evaluate whether your specific workflow requires iPad-exclusive apps before deciding.

Budget artists should start with the Galaxy Tab S9 FE with its included S Pen. It provides a complete drawing setup at $449 compared to iPad plus Apple Pencil at $478.
